Did you know?...
Not counting summers and during school, I've only ever had three jobs. How many jobs have you had since you were in adult?

All in 6 years since high school graduation. I remember having to work 24 hours some days...luckily those days are history.

Since age 16 (legal working age):
Library Page
Grave Digger
Factory Worker
Truck Driver
Soft Drink Salesman
Musician (always the second job)
Surgical Intern, Resident
Fellow in Human Transplantation
General and Vascular Surgeon
Curmedgeon
I've had seven. All related to architecture. The first 5 firms I worked for laid off all their employees during a recession. Of those 5, 3 closed their doors entirely, the Tennessee Valley Authority shut down its entire Architectural Design Branch, and one loaned me out to another firm to avoid paying unemployment.
The sixth job was starting up a software company which foundered during a recession. So, we sold off the software to a Fortune 500 company to fund our current business. I have owned a boutique
consulting firm for the last 23 years.
Beware the ups and downs of the architecture/engineering/construction fields. During recessions, unemployment can reach 30-40%. This is in a field where people are underpaid in the first place and has a much less reliable partnership program than law.

I did notice that most compensation/benefit packages in my industry peaked at the five year mark. This, I think, contributed to higher turnover rates due to employees looking for greener grass.
My salary and responsibilities kept increasing, but no one was afforded additional benefits for ten, fifteen, or twenty years than some one with five years.

37 years worth, all in software development except for the US Navy:

Usability Professionals' Association
Nielsen/Norman Group
Wake County Public Schools

And my current job is ending, possibly this week (the client is dribbling out funding in 2 and 4 week chunks). Contracting is a way of life for a lot of people in software development, especially older people. It's kind of an insane way to live, though.
Two of the above list (IBM and Nortel) were 10 years. The Navy was 6 years. The term the evolutionists use is "punctuated equilibrium."
Starting at age 13:
Paperboy (4 years)
Lifeguard (3 years)
McDonalds (1 Year)
US Navy (SWO)(7 years)
Grocery store cashier (a few months)
Retail credit card issuer (16 years)
WalMart (12 years)
Substitute teacher (1 year)

When it comes to employment history, I am definitely the exception in my circle of friends.
I have worked for the same company for 32 years – starting when I was 18 years old. But during my tenure I have worked in four completely different job classifications and have been an hourly, salaried and commissioned employee. In addition, the company itself has changed ownership four times and increased in size tenfold since I began working there.
I guess you could say we’ve been through a lot of change together.
