OK, I'm calling BS. I'm an impecunious student, and even I wait for the bill. Does this restaurant not give receipts? If they do, how the heck did the guy get his hands on them? And don't most people (impecunious students aside) pay by credit card anyway?

There's more to this story than the Yahoo version. Disgruntled employee anyone?

This is the premise of a Czech film comedy Vrchní prchni from 1980 (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0081730/). I have always thought that a story like this could only be conceived under socialism, with its chronic shortage of restaurant personnel and their indolence. It took some time, but I was proven wrong.
