The strategic language initiative

This strikes me as a very good idea, but four years later than it should have been. Heck, eight years later than it should have been.

Late is better than never, though.

I agree, although I hope the curriculum is developed further by professors Smith and Wesson :)

You have to send students overseas if you want them to learn to speak another language. Trying to teach a language in a class room (at the HS level) is horrible inefficient, and in the end, ineffective.

I agree a straegic plan is overdue. I don't like the sound of this bill though. I worry it will be horridly mismanaged and most of the money will go into languages with no strategic value, becoming yet another federal handout.

A simpler method would be to just offer full-ride scholarships to foreign universities in exchange for some form of service (3 years of unspecified government employment). You can't live in another counrty for 4 years without picking up some language and culture.

You think our universitys' are liberal, europe's make ours look conservative. Send them to Egypt, let them learn a language and let them see how terrible Islam is. How about Iraq?

Na, better to send them to Israel, they can learn three or four languages there.
