On nuclear double standards

From a recent Stratfor letter on the standoff with Iran:
This, by the way, is a good place to pause and explain to readers who will write in wondering why the United States will tolerate an Israeli nuclear force but not an Iranian one. The answer is simple. Israel will probably not blow up New York. That's why the United States doesn't mind Israel having nukes and does mind Iran having them. Is that fair? This is power politics, not sharing time in preschool. End of digression.

Sometimes, even obvious arguments bear repeating over and over again.

Yup. Iran has the right to try to build a nuclear bomb and we have the right/responsibility to try to stop them.

I am toubled by the combination of the following recent events:

OBL tape, Amadinejad visiting Damascus, the upcoming IAEA / UN talks, Sharon's incapacitation and Chirac's vow to nuke any state that attacks France with WMDs. Throw this together with the large disposible cell phone purchases in the past couple months in the US and it seems to me that Iran/Syria and Qaeda are whipping up some terror coordination in the near future to prevent action against the Iran nuke regime.

UPDATE: Astute Blogger agrees, and points out that:

Iran is moving its foreign currency reserves out of European banks as a pre-emptive measure against any possible U.N. sanctions over its nuclear program, the Central Bank Governor said Friday.

This is not good. Something is brewing.

Powerlineblog is usually right on the money, but with their post linked below I must disagree most strongly, and would comment there, but it is not possible.

The US should stay out of Israeli politics much like the reverse, but to be against Olmert is to be against Sharon's policy, which has proven effective in furthering Israeli and American security in the long view. My explanation here: http://americansforfreedom.blogspot.com/2006/01/powerlineblog-is-wrong-on-olmert.html

During times of attack, even well disciplined people will engage in activities that display their internal thinking. You can be assured that very smart people will be closely watching the movement of currency, relatives, and investments of Iran’s biggest and most powerful decision makers.

There is another activity that has been taking place in the middle of all of this. The relationship building that is taking place with Cuba. Afterall, you can't get much closer to the US mainland than that.
