Solving Gitmo: The "reverse Mariel"

It's a Friday night, so if you are reading this blog you could do a lot worse than listen to the latest edition of "Radio Derb," John Derbyshire's podcast. Think of it as conservative talk radio with complete sentences.

Anyway, about 12:30 along Derb proposes a solution for the Gitmo problem, which now vexes the Obama administration as truly as it did the Bush: A "reversel Mariel." Remember the "Mariel boat lift" back in 1980, during which Fidel Castro emptied his jails into boats dispatched toward the United States? Well, Derb suggests that we snip a little hole in the fence in the Guantanamo base, spread the word among the prisoners there, and quietly turn the other way while they sneak in to Cuba. Liberals, Derb argues, should approve, given their high regard for Castro and the universal health care that his government provides. The prisoners would be "free" in the sense of more free than they are at Guantanamo or, in the main, their respective nations of origin. Worst case, they bedevil the Commies in Hanoi.

Seems like a synergy to me. A great idea, with only one known unknown: What if the inmates don't want to go through the fence?

My son was stationed at Gitmo in 1997. There is a minefield between the American base and the fence leading to Cuba. Many of the mines are very old, and may be inactive. But you just never know. He claims to have heard explosions from Cubans trying to cross the minefield.
Personally, I like the idea of putting the prisoners on a boat, with a compass that points to Mecca, and tell them to get there on their own.

I like the minefield.

"What if the inmates don't want to go through the fence?"

Cattle prods.

Not such a good idea, at least as regarding those who get through the minefield. Chavez and the Castros are buddy-buddy. There are Hezbollah operatives in Venezuela, also buddy-buddy with Chavez. Those Gitmo people who "escape" and get through the minefield get sent to Venezuela and Hezbollah.

Cheap shot on the talk radio bit.

Much of talk radio is smart. Limbaugh (and Steyn when he fills in), Ingram...these DJs could be smarter than the average Princtonian.
