Blue Nation or Red?

Brookings and the Hoover Institute have collaborated on a huge study of American political views (executive summary here). Among other findings, the two parties have, in fact, become substantially more polarized in their policy positions. So we're not imagining it.

In the late 1950s voters often complained that both parties were pretty much the same. Voters wanted two distinctly different options.

Be careful what you wish for. You might get it.

P.S. In those days some people said, "Democrats start wars and Republicans start recessions." That was before the presidencies of George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush, who managed to do both. (Woodrow Wilson managed to do both, too.)"
