Maybe He Should Join a Synagogue

We all know Obama and family just "resigned" from their Church (who knew you resigned from Church?). I guess his prior commentary about disowning blah blah blah is moot.

I think he should join a Temple. In Florida. That's what I think.

... sure, it was something he could no sooner do than denounce his blackness. Now, since he's of the party that debated the meaning of 'is', what're the nuances of resignation versus denouncement?

The man is losing the popular vote, and the Dems are cornered into an interesting corner. Wasn't Algore's argument, and that of the Left based on the popular vote?

If he takes second in that metric, should he run as Hillary's Veep?

CP - Well, he does like to tell Jewish audiences that his first name is related to or derived from "Baruch." Your idea sounds like a good concept for a new sitcom. I think Obama will have to work very hard to carry Florida in November, where McCain is pretty popular, and it went to Bush by 300,000+ votes in 2004. If McCain carries FL and OH, he has a clear path to 270, and Obama would have to just about run the table on all other swing states. All of that said, do not underestimate Obama's ability to win in November -- Michael Dukakis or Walter Mondale (in their primes) could win this November, given the current political environment.

Does this mean no more charitable donations to TUCC from the Obamas?

After the latest Pfleger diatribe as a guest speaker at the TUCC pulpit, the timing is smart. As I think TH posted when the first Wright videos began to circulate some months ago, what is most concerning to me is not so much what is said from the pulpit (which is one person's protected speech), but the approving reaction from the vast majority of the audience in the church following the most incendiary remarks. Who wants to worship with people who wear their victimization on their sleeve -- fully acknowledging that they or their ancestors were victimized -- how does that help them in their relationship with God? I understand that many Roman Catholics believe that grace can only be achieved through some suffering, but that refers to current suffering to you personally, not something in the past relating to someone else.

if he was to join one then people would see it as political positioning. I say he does something out of the box and become a buddest

"Resigning" his church doesn't do it for me. And the timing? He's known Fr. Phleger for pretty much the same amount of time as Rev. Wright, and called him a "spiritual advisor", just like Wright. FWIW, the Roman Catholic Church needs to fire Phleger. I'm Catholic, and if I had ever sat through a sermon like his, I'd never go back to that parish.

Miss Ladybug is correct as usual. I think he has been "reprimanded" by the Cardinal in Chicago, but being defrocked might be more appropriate. Excommunication might be a bit extreme. In any case, we expect better conduct from local community leaders, and I think church leaders fall into that category.

As is frequently the case, Scott Ott at Scrapplefacehas an excellent take on this one, which he published at his site at Townhall, as an open letter to the Senator, "Dear Sen. Obama, Join My Church."

A few key grafs from the invitation . . .

"Of course, we're not perfect. We lack some of the features to which your family has become accustomed. For example, our pastors never talk about political candidates from the pulpit. There's not a whole lot of angry screaming -- in fact, none. No preacher here has ever called down God's condemnation upon our native land.

In fact, on Memorial Day and Independence Day and Veterans Day, we praise God that we live in a free land, thanks to the willing sacrifice of those who bled and died that this nation might live. We actually sing, from time to time, 'God Bless America', because it's a prayer to the one who has secured our liberty that he might guide us even in dark and troubling times.
"

It is certainly worth a read!
