We can't let this bank fail

[Bumped to the top.]

[Welcome Corner readers, and thank you Andy for linking. Your job is to contribute enough to this very worthy cause and force me to raise the cap on my pledge to match. Prove how generous conservatives are!]

Deb Smith, who runs the hilariously-named blog Jersey Bites, has organized "Jersey bloggers" -- and I certainly am one -- into a truly massive blogburst in support of the Community FoodBank of New Jersey, which needs our help. As this moving video makes clear, the Community FoodBank of New Jersey is a vital component in the safety net for thousands of people, and it is hurting. Yes, the economy sucks and we are all trying to hang on to our own money, but this is no time to stint on the essential charities. I donated $100, and will match the next $900 of contributions from TigerHawk readers. [UPDATE: As of 8:45 9:15 9:45 10:50 this morning noon I have already received notice of $600 $1250 $1600 in contributions! Great job, keep the money coming. There are people who need help out there. Keep it up, and I'll raise the cap on the match! I will now match contributions up to $2500!] How will I know? Well, if you contribute send me an email at tigerhawkblog *at* gmail *dot* com, or just post a comment with the amount that you contributed. Do it now! It will make you feel good.

I dunno. Good point, though.

Aren't people using food banks just lazy moochers who should pull themselves up by their own bootstraps?

Um, no? I assume that's a slam at conservatives, but it makes no sense. I've never met a conservative who opposes foodbanks where individuals can choose to donate to help the poor. Come to think of it, I've never met a conservative who opposes charities where people can choose to donate. I'm pretty sure most of the complaints are about people who live on the government's dime when they could actually work.

Essentially no American is against helping poor people. The only argument between liberals and conservatives is whether that help should be delivered systematically and coercively or unsystematically and without coercion. I choose the latter, and have supported food banks (though not this one) with charitable contributions for much of my adult life. Back in the day, some of the staunchest conservatives I know were big contributors to the Greater Chicago Food Depository. Finally, there is evidence that people who identify themselves as conservatives give more money to charity than liberals, which also makes sense. If you believe that everything is the responsibility of the government, you assume you are done once you have paid your taxes.

But, that said, this is your chance, ManicParrot, to prove us wrong! I'll match the contributions of all political persuasions!

I know I am going to sound like Ebeneezer Scrooge, but don't they have Federal Programs like WIC and Food Stamps in NJ?

This is a great thing. Thank you so much. And, I'm glad you like the name of my blog. I wanted a name that was on the tip of everyone's tongue here in NJ at least twice a day. ;) And, just so your readers know, Jersey Bites is a food blog. No political action on my site, sorry.

Yes, but one does not need to be a liberal to know that those programs are not a complete solution for needy people. Far from it. In the United States, it remains the case that private charity is a huge part of the safety net. If you are a conservative, you almost certainly believe that is a good thing for a whole host of reasons.

After a heads-up from SportsProf, I'm in for $100 as of a few minutes ago. Good job; way to raise your matching!
