Robot density

I'm not sure what this means for a national economy, but here is a nifty graph that shows the density of industrial robots as a percentage of the human workforce, by country.

I recently asked the CEO of an Indonesian manufacturing company about the impact of industrial robots on employment in his country. (Indonesia's population is about 238 million. The GDP - per capita was about USD 3,600 last year.)

"That's a problem for the next generation," he said.

Automation isn't as clear as "robots per capita". Most automation can be done with or without robots. Robots are used a lot in certain industries, like automotive assembly. And not used in automated food or chemical plants

American industry is very automated. It just does the automation with industrial computers (PLCs) more often than it does with robots.

My first thought is that the countries with the biggest labor problems are the biggest users of robots.
