America's most competent foreign policy official
Is there any doubt who America's most competent foreign policy official is? Let us hope that the next administration does the right thing.

Do we even know what party he belongs to?

It's common (but I don't think universal) for officers to not register with any political party, especially senior officers. Part of the 'apolitical military that doesn't get involved in domestic politics' philosophy.

A very good man. I would vote for him even if he was a Democrat. He can be trusted to do what is best for the whole country. He certainly has the smarts for it.
Assuming Obama wins, my advice would be for the GOP to run no one in '12, and have Petraeus run as an Independent. The Republicans would have no problem following him and the Democrats would reveal too much about themselves if they refused to.
Even a big lefty homo like myself thinks that Petraeus absolutely rules. That guy is awesome. The guy is smart, patient, and is a great diplomat.

Well, apex, people actually did not know which party Eisenhower supported until after the war. Both parties knew they wanted him, but neither knew which way he would go.

Precisely my point - like Eisenhower, he still swings in neutral territory, yet would prove a potent asset to whoever can sign him on. That being said, I foresee some problems for the democrats and their moveon.org wing to draft him, but stranger things have happened.
