McCain at the Alfred E. Smith dinner

John McCain was very amusing at the Alfred E. Smith dinner last night, an occasion on which even bitter political opponents embrace each other and their audience -- which always includes big media -- as the inside of the inside.

They were both very funny; this was great & thanks for sharing it in such an easy-access format.

(You can see, of course, that JMc does not particularly enjoy laughing at himself!)

John McCain was funnier- no question.

At first I thought that that might be because I am biased towards him, but then my wife pointed out that the audience laughed much harder at his jokes, and somehow I doubt that they were biased towards him.

I thought McCain was much funnier. He had better timing and better delivery. He is accustomed to telling jokes in public. The audience response was much better for McCain than Obama.

Obama was a novice in joke telling. He would laugh at his joke before he told it and the response of the audience was flat. His stutter got in the way of his timing and made his jokes were affected by this.

I agree with Jim Clay and Southernroots...
Senator McCain was much funnier. Like Mr. Clay, I questioned whether my personal politics warped my opinion. But like his wife, I too noticed that the audience seemed more genuinely amused with Senator McCain than with Senator Obama.
Not only do I agree with southernroots that Senator McCain has better timing and delivery, and that he seems much more comfortable in general than Senator Obama, but I also think that Senator McCain is more gracious. That graciousness is apparent in his speech.
