Imad Mughniyeh Killed By a Car Bomb in Damascus

This is very gratifying news I've just picked up off Bloomberg, hence no link. This guy has been a tremendous enemy of the US for over 20 years; he was responsible for the death of Robert Dean Stethem of the US Navy in the 1985 TWA hijacking. He was a senior player in Hezbollah and a master terrorist. He was a planner for the 1983 Beirut Marines Barrack bombing.

Getting him is a huge piece of news. I'll be curious to hear who did it.

Update: Instapundit has the links. This story makes my day. There is justice.

This is a step in the right direction. As Syria has long paved the Road from Damascus w car bombs and the like, without any consequence, we should reciprocate on the Road To Damascus. An "accident" around some Syrian Secret Police (Mukhabarat?) installations would be nice. Hama rules!

"for over 20 years"

"There is justice."

These two statements are mutually exclusive.

The guy eluded us for TWENTY F*CKING YEARS! In short, he made us look just like the bumbling fools that we are. The fact that someone FINALLY nailed his ragged ass isn't "justice" -- it's just the odds catching up with him at long last. His continued existence made a mockery of the most "powerful" nation on earth and he's right to be hailed as a hero by his own people.

You want the truest definition of a martyr? I give you Imad Fayez Mughniyeh.

I love it when the good guys play dirty. That's when they start to win. Though I'm sure that credit for this doesn't belong to us. Probably the Israelis.

Dr. Mercury: Spot on.

The whodunit on this one is already starting. I mean, it's early yet, and it could just be somebody forgot to put out the press release. But there are some interesting indicators...

Strangely, the Israelis have said it wasn't them -- and they really don't have any reason I could think of to deny it.

The usual Beltway suspects have failed to claim responsibility in the WaPo or the NYT so far, so it's probably not them.

If nobody claims it, then whoever did it needs plausible deniability for fear of direct retribution. Which leaves us with mostly Arab actors ...
