The way we were 


Jonah Goldberg claws through the National Review archives and finds a remarkable contemporaneous analysis of the Republican defeat in the midterm elections of 1986, six years into the presidency of Ronald Reagan. There is a lesson in there for just about everybody.

There are also interesting, and comparable lessons to be drawn from the elections of 1958, the mid-terms of Eisenhower's second term. The Democrats picked up 15 Senate seats and 48 House seats in that one.
