Egypt arrests a prominent blogger

Egypt has apparently arrested, Alaa, one of its most prominent Arabic bloggers, in connection with the ongoing struggle in that country over the independence of the judiciary. Haitham Sabbah has the story and the context, and the Sandmonkey has more, with a picture of Alaa.

Frankly, I have always been mystified why we give those clowns (the Egyptian government) $2 billion per year in aid. Anyone out there can explain it?

Under the realpolitik regime, it was stabilization money to bribe the Egyptians into using other distractions for their abused populace than yet another war with Israel. Today, it's something of a holdover, money to be paid until we figure out a way to get a free Egypt by pulling it.

Folks, it's an election year and all sorts of politicians are looking for way to show they are tough on thugs and are fiscally responsible. If Alaa is not released immediately, we need to raise the stripping Egypt's money out to the political world and get real pressure applied.
