Free Alaa: Keep the heat on
[Moved to the top all day, today. Look below for new posts.]
Want one? Get the code from Beirut Spring.
Egyptian blogger Alaa is still in jail "pending investigation," and needs your help. Sabbah has updates, as does Sandmonkey, who has links to Arab bloggers who are raising a ruckus. Global Voices has much more still on Alaa and the seven others detained with him. (I'm not ignoring them, so much as assuming that if they let Alaa go it will be hard to keep the others.)
Glenn Reynolds has been a trooper: "Remember his name." So has Michelle Malkin, who has a picture of Alaa and his wife, and many others.
The MSM is starting to get involved. The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review has a story that quotes the Sandmonkey (Rick Santorum, where are you? -- shore up the base, man!), as does the Guardian.
My original post is below. There is a young man alone and terrified in an Egyptian jail. Call or email the Egyptian embassy now and if you know your Senator or Congressmen, see if you can't get him or her to make a statement. If you are a lefty blogger, see if you can't see your way clear to raising the volume -- nobody can drive outraged email like Kos and Atrios and the other activist blogs.
Egypt has apparently arrested, Alaa, one of its most prominent Arabic bloggers, in connection with the ongoing struggle in that country over the independence of the judiciary. Haitham Sabbah has the story and the context, and the Sandmonkey has more, with a picture of Alaa.
