Moussaoui

Most Tigerhawk readers know I don't have a soft spot for al qaeda. Still, I don't think this guy should be executed. Much as the vengeful side of me might enjoy it, he was sitting in the clink when 9/11 happened. Is he likely a co-conspirator? Yes. But by that standard, Terry Nichols should have been executed alongside Tim McVeigh, and he is sitting in prison. Same with their friend, Mike Fortias (I think that's his name). The evidence is much clearer that they both knew what McVeigh intended and Nichols clearly aided and abetted.

Let him rot in jail. But I don't think we should use up the execution bullet on Moussaoui.

I don't want him executed because I am vengeful.

This guy truly believes that if he dies for the Faith he goes straight to Paradise as a Shaheed Martyr.

Inform him that he will get to rot in prison for a long as we can keep his body alive and as his organs start to fail we will put him on machines to keep him from dieing and going to his Reward.

Then I would put him on a suicide watch to prevent that out for him.

I'll second the emotion, Dan. Let him rot in prison. Executing him makes him a martyr. Sitting in a prison cell makes him irrelevant.

I agree, but I can't help but think of comedian Ron White's famous routine in opposition of the execution of Osama bin Laden. Upshot: "Osama bin Laden is spiritually prepared to die for Islam, but he is spiritually ill-prepared to lick grape jelly from Thunder Dick's ___ ___."

He wants death badly.

So...

Let him sit in stir.

Trouble is, as far as he's concerned he's already secured his eternal spot in Paradise, with the 72 virgins and all that. All the Feds can do is make him wait a few extra decades (and what's that next to eternity?) to claim his heavenly reward.

On the other hand, so what if he becomes a martyr for other Islamic supremacists? Martyrs have long since become a dime a dozen in this jihad of theirs. Last time I checked, Islamic supremacists already have no shortage of martyrs to rally around, and it seems to me that they've long passed the point of being as motivated as they're going to get anyway. I'd submit that the law of diminishing returns applies, and therefore the issue of Moussaoui's martyr status should carry zero weight in the decision to execute or not.

I don't think he's already assured of the 72 virgins, provided we don't give him the death penalty.

Even assuming that he is, let's make him wait. Positing 8% per annum as the discount rate for virgins in paradise, and 40 years added to his lifespan, the Rule of, er, 72 indicates that we can reduce the present value of his arrival in paradise to approximately 3.3 virgins. And 8% is probably too low a discount rate for someone who's licking grape jelly.

Cardinalpark!

It happened! We agree!

I figured we would on this one. Of course, if I had to guess, I would predict that you would never support the death penalty. I do. Please correct me if my guess is wrong.

He was determined eligible for the death penalty because he knew about 9/11 in advance and lied to investigators when he was asked about future terrorist attacks in the United States, thereby directly contributing to the loss of life on said day.

i.e. because he kept his mouth shut, some 2800 people were killed and an entirely new era of foreign and domestic policy was entered.

Aside, doesn't letting him linger in prison because he's a jihadi 1) validate his belief that he's guaranteed a place in Paradise, because we obviously want to keep him from it and 2) reward a hard core terrorist criminal with continued life?

Maybe we could arrange to have him beheaded in Saudi Arabia.
