This die was cast long ago. The difference between Dubai and Damascus was blurred at about the same time as the difference between Baghdad and Kabul.

Another thing to consider is that Bush's handling of both the Dubai Ports World flap and the cartoon protests suggests that he has finally fallen back on realpolitik. It can't be good for the nation's morale when the commander-in-chief feels he has to suck up to the Muslim world's powers-that-be (the same ones he once swore to democratize) in order to keep them on our side and continuing to feed our addic - er, to keep the light sweet crude flowing in. Maybe it should be called "petro-realpolitik."
