The Joseph Smith Bicentennial

Joseph Smith, the man whose revelations founded the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, came into this world two hundred years ago today. Bubblehead has a post in recognition, with links.

Whatever one thinks of the Mormon religion, it is astonishing that a poor farm boy from Vermont was able to build a church of profoundly devoted worshipers -- people who would endure tremendous persecution, and who chose to settle one of the most remote and inhospitable places on the continent rather than revise their beliefs. The BBC has an excellent short history here.

With the recent transubstantiation post and this Mormon one, the blog seems to be taking on a religious tone lately
