The city of big shoulders....shrugs

In a disappointing move, the City of Chicago has apparently decided it should have its own foreign policy, and calls for an immediate surrender to Al Qaeda:

Chicago on Wednesday became the nation's largest city to urge the Bush administration to withdraw U.S. troops from Iraq at once.

The resolution, approved 29-9, seeks an "immediate and orderly" withdrawal. The City Council has 50 aldermen.

Chicago joins other cities -- including San Francisco, Santa Cruz, Calif., 50 communities in Vermont and the Chicago suburb of Evanston -- in calling for the withdrawal of troops.

Apparently at least some council members were concerned that this might leave the impression that they are not serious people, and so they briskly moved on to other business of critical importance.

Veterinarians and animal rights activists on Tuesday described in graphic detail how geese and ducks suffer while being force-fed to create the liver delicacy known as foie gras.

After hearing the compelling testimony, the Health Committee took no action on a proposal by Ald. Joe Moore (49th) to ban the sale of foie gras in Chicago restaurants.

Ok, I acknowledge that for the events to have unfolded exactly as I have portrayed them would have required a temporal rift. But I think the point remains valid.
