Military recruitment update

Notwithstanding the obstruction of the anti-war left (who nevertheless "support the troops"), in August the Army recruited more new soldiers than in any month in the last four years. It will still miss its target for the full year ended in September, but it has met its monthly objectives since June. The Marines, Navy and Air Force have all met their objectives.

The reserves and National Guard are still coming up short, which is not surprising given the tough time they have had in Iraq and the strong economy. As I have written many times before, the solution to this is not a draft but serious support of recruitment from all politicians who claim that they "support the troops." Jaw-boning works: the Army's numbers have turned up steadily since the President actually asked prospective soldiers to join up. Any politician that does not do the same should be asked to explain in what way he or she "supports the troops" if he or she is unwilling to help recruit their replacements.
