"Good News" is up

Installment #21 of Arthur Chrenkoff's series chronicalling "good news from Iraq" is up. It includes a lot of post-election news, plus news on the economy, security, infrastructure, and so forth. I haven't gotten through the whole thing, but I did see the interesting bit that the Iraqi dinar continues to appreciate against the U.S. dollar. Now, the dollar hasn't been the most manly currency in the last couple of years, but that Iraq's should continue to make progress against it during these tough times suggests that there is hope for the future there, illuminated through market signals.

Best of luck to your brother. I hope that he returns from Iraq intact, and that his family does not suffer too much from the burden of his absence.

Not to pour cold water on your post, but a friend of mine is a contractor in Iraq. In his most recent e-mail (from just a few days ago) he says that the dinar is selling "very, very, very, very, very, very, very cheap." So if it is improving it must be from a low, low, low, low, low, low, low level.

He also says the situation in Iraq has improved somewhat since the end of Ramadan, but says that Ramadan was "about as horrible as it gets."

Just a note of realism.
