The tsunami shatters Scandinavia

As a proportion of population, the numbers of Scandinavians unaccounted for in the wake of the Indian Ocean tsunami are very sobering. There are 400 Danes missing, from a country of 5.3 million people. If Americans were missing in that proportion, there would be almost 22,000 missing Americans. The Norwegians are suffering even more -- of 4.5 million people, the Norwegians are missing up to 460 in southern Asia. The proportionate American loss would be about 30,000. Before you bash Scandinavian countries for criticizing American generousity, remember the extent of their fear and grief and consider the pain that this country would feel if we lost so many of our own.

Ed: Didn't your mom ever tell you that "two wrongs don't make a right"? Be better than they are.

They can express their grief and compassion the same way we do: putting their money and their manpower where their mouth is. Complaining that we don't comfort them enough is just, well, *small*. I think this is an example of the "squeaky wheel gets the oil" philosophy of life. I notice they're not complaining about Saudi Arabia.

Any idea on tsunami/earthquake training in Scandinavia?

One of the saddest things of this whole affair was how many would be saved if they had sought higher ground when the ocean first receded.
