Ugly Americans

Slate's Elisabeth Eaves has a new scheme for classifying globe-trotting voters:
While Americans who go abroad to kill people vote Republican, Americans who go abroad to do just about anything else vote Democratic. This is the logic behind the unprecedented effort to get out the vote among U.S. civilians overseas, and the reason that effort is overwhelmingly Democratic.

That's weird, because I vote Republican, yet I've spent six weeks abroad this year and so far I haven't killed anybody. I haven't even wanted to kill anybody, except maybe Elisabeth Eaves during the last few minutes, and I'm fairly sure that feeling will pass.

Americans who go abroad to conduct business, outnumbering those who go abroad to kill people by a longshot even in these parlous times, often vote Republican, probably even more often than not. It is not even slightly surprising that Americans who go abroad and find themselves with lots of free time -- just like other Americans with lots of free time -- vote Democratic. The common thread is having lots of free time, not traveling abroad.
