Life goes on

A reader has asked that I provide my picks for MVP, Cy Young, etc. My despondency over the Cubs, which is usually over and done with by early August, will delay that for a few days, but I'll take a stab at it later in the week. For now, let's look at the possible World Series matchups:

Yankees/Cardinals
Yankees/Dodgers
Yankees/Braves
Yankees/Astros

The first three look good for different reasons. If I had to predict a matchup, I'd say the Yanks/Cards has the best chance of coming to pass of all the possible matchups. Would it be a good series? Yanks/Dodgers and Yanks/Braves also have potentially compelling story lines. In my opinion Yanks/Astros offers only the return of Clemens story, and I'm already dreading it.

Red Sox/Cardinals
Red Sox/Dodgers
Red Sox/Braves
Red Sox/Astros

All these matchups are interesting primarily because they will give the Red Sox one more chance to win a World Series. Houston could actually give them the stiffest test. Cardinals' and Braves' pitching is not overwhelming, and the Dodgers' staff, stellar all year, is in tatters. You know that if the Sox return to the Series, they will have to beat Roger Clemens to get the monkey off their back, and they will probably fail.

Twins/Cardinals
Twins/Dodgers
Twins/Braves
Twins/Astros

I feel guilty saying it, but I have no interest in watching the Twins in the World Series. They are not compelling to me, given the alternatives. I am ashamed, because the 1991 World Series between the Twins and the Braves was the best I have ever seen, bar none. Perhaps a rematch would be equally dramatic, but I doubt it.

Angels/Cardinals
Angels/Dodgers
Angels/Braves
Angels/Astros

The Angels are a great team, and have an excellent chance of winning it all. An Angels/Cards series has the potential to be quite the slugfest, and I'm excited just thinking about it. The other matchups don't do a lot for me at the moment, but I am sure after surviving teams have been through the crucible of the playoffs, they will each have a story worth telling.

Just something to think about while we wait for the action to start.
