Cubs screw the pooch, Astros sneak in

The Houston Astros clinched the NL Wildcard berth on Sunday, after the San Francisco Giants blew a 3 run ninth inning lead to the Dodgers Saturday night. The Cubs were eliminated Saturday afternoon after losing their seventh game in eight chances. After playing outstanding baseball for most of September, the great unraveling began 8 days ago when, with two outs and a three run lead against the hapless Mets, Latroy Hawkins served up a three-run homer to a AAA banjo hitter on a two strike pitch. The Cubs lost in extra innings and the defeat seemed to suck the life force from them.

Of course as despondent as Chicago must be, it's arguably worse in the bay area, where both the Giants and the Oakland A's squandered opportunities and came up short.

Life must go on. There have been many many memorable post seasons that did not include the Cubs. The Cardinals look ferocious. Houston has a chance to win its first ever play-off series. The old Yankees/Red Sox drama stands ready to add another chapter. Even the improbable Braves might make another run at it.

It's October folks.
