The Tigers are 3-0

Princeton squeaked by Columbia this afternoon 27-26, going to 3-0 for the first time in who knows how long. (SportsProf?) I actually saw last year's Princeton-Columbia game, which ended in a victory for the Lions on an unbelievable Hail Mary pass.

The Hawkeyes trounced Michigan State 38-16, so it was a good day in the TigerHawk household.

The year was 1995, and it was the last time the Tigers won the Ivy title outright. That was a great year, because an underrated QB named Brock Harvey resisted the coaches' request to become a defensive back or receiver, and then the starter, Harry Nakielny, got hurt. Harvey ran the option to perfection, and the defense, led by an undersized linebacker named Dave Patterson (6', 205 -- he was later named the Ivy Player of the Year) was superb. This year the Tigers' have many roadblocks, including the juggernaut that is the University of Pennsylvania. Penn isn't undefeated (they lost to Villanova), but the Quakers are the team to beat in the Ivies. That said, the Tigers' defense, especially their linebackers (Zak Keasey and Justin Stull) and defensive backs (Mueller and McCareins) are as good as it gets. Great start for the Tigers and their fans!

Re: Princeton

Any win is a good win, and R.D. reflects the optimism expressed by former A.D. Royce Flippin at the football preview luncheon in Philadelphia the wek before last.

Re: Iowa

Any win is a good win, even against a second-rate program like the Spartans. The great result for the weekend was OSU finally being on the other end of a close game -- they have been incredibly lucky over the past season and a half.
