Pizza is a Vegetable Now

Thanks to the magical powers of lobbyists. Congress wanted to cut costs in school lunches, which demand a certain number of vegetables, so a piece of legislation decided that the tomato paste in pizza counts as a serving of vegetables. Kids are gonna be thrilled!

Reagan said that catsup should be counted as a vegetable. Even I, a Reagan supporter, laughed until it became clear a number of years later that the lycopene in catsup (and tomato paste) inhibits the development and progress of prostatic cancer.

I'll have my pizza with onions, mushrooms, and olives.

Enjoy,

Yeah, it's a vegetable, but I'm not seeing how it's a full portion of a vegetable.

Is salsa a vegetable? Tomato soup?

Certainly looking at the tomato content of one slice of pizza it may look a little silly, but how much of the stuff do they eat in one year? Multipled by an entire school, the lunch room may produce *tons* of tomato products in one year. It's a good idea to get credit for that.

+1 to Congress.

Animal, vegetable, of mineral? For those of us of a certain age that question is very familiar. It was the most asked question on the popular radio and TV game show "Twenty Questions".

Pray tell what else would you call ketchup or tomato paste?
