Thursday night music video: An embarrassing confession
Mock me you will, but I think Orianthi's pop hit "According To You" is hilarious, and -- more importantly -- she gets some impressive sound out of her guitar. Enjoy, or not.

I dunno. I still prefer Barry Sadler.

At this rate, you'll be visiting your son's college dorm a little more than you need to.
Orianthi -- I never heard of her until this moment -- is the new Avril Lavigne.
Taylor Swift is a talent.
I'm still trying to figure out Lady Gaga -- who I just learned sorta went to my all-boy Jesuit high school.

She's got a pretty nice, commercial guitar technique...but her songs are indiscernable from the herd.
, atPop music doesn't place much premium on guitar technique. For that I usually look to metal guitarists like Gus G or John Petrucci.

the guitar looks like it's from the Paul Reed Smith Custom Shop.

I hadn't heard of her either, but apparently Michael Jackson picked her to play guitar for his comeback tour.

So, like, Tigerhawk, thanks for bringing that to my attention. I have to say - really - that in the genre of sniveling, half-defiant female rants, this has to be in the top 10 released so far this year.

Orianthi's vocals remind me much of the underrated American Idoler Kelly Clarkson, who has been one of the few consistent young rockers of the decade. I'd toss Pink in there as well.
I like her guitar work too (likewise, never heard of her until a moment ago). Hat tip to Eddie Van Halen, whose tapping style forever changed the solo rock riff.

Anon noted that Michael Jackson chose her as a guitarist. That reminded me that MJ used Eddie Van Halen on "Beat It", oh so many years ago. It appears that MJ was consistent, being drawn to similar guitar styles.
