This is Johnny's rehab program and a diversion. Leftie believers may see this as closure and leave him alone. All that is necessary is that the captive media sees it that way, as well, and leaves him alone for 2 to 5 years. Then, he might have a chance of returning to the spotlight.
In the short term, all Edwards needs is for the press to not investigate his past Does anyone really believe that Reille is the only honey he was banging? The media can describe the circumstances of every date Tiger Woods had. Edwards is one of their own and the would relish even more reason to leave him alone.

TH - even before I clicked on the link I knew it was going to be a story about John Edwards.
I agree with Anon above - this is a total calculation by Edwards. I dont know about all the other women and I dont care to speculate; however I do believe that he thinks by marrying this lady it somehow legitimizes his actions in his twisted mind. That his Lefty base will give him a pass because it was true love after all...?
