Fidel pipes up

Just last Friday, we posted about a thawing with Havana. Well, in the immortal words of SNL character Emily Litella, "Never mind." Or, at least, one step forward and two steps back.

The AP lede:

"Fidel Castro says President Barack Obama 'misinterpreted' his brother Raul's remarks regarding the United States and bristled at the suggestion that Cuba should free political prisoners or cut taxes on dollars people send to the island."
and also

"The former president appeared to be throwing a dose of cold water on growing expectations for improved bilateral relations — suggesting Obama had no right to dare suggest that Cuba make even small concessions. He also seemed to suggest too much was being made of Raul's comments about discussing 'everything' with U.S. authorities."
Fidel Castro also "blasted the new U.S. president for showing signs of 'superficiality.'"

Apparently, there are limits to "soft power," and the good graces of President Obama's international popularity.

Once again, Fausta is correct.

Show a little more compassion here, Escort81. How is the New York Times to cover this?

NYT loves Obama. NYT loves Castro. So what to do when the two beings it loves most fall out?

Time for the NYT to start re-running some Abu Ghraib panties-on-the-head torture photos, methinks.

Just another example of BHO's faulty expectations. Tete-a-tetes with Castro and Noriaga only serve to give them stature in the eyes of those they enslave.

What would Armando Valladares have to say?
And would anyone be interested?
