Protection money

Among three notorious interest groups, which gives the most money to politicians, and what is it trying to achieve?

While I get the nefarious connotation of the phrase "protection money", I'm not sure it fits the case. I always thought of protection money as what the mob extorted from small shopkeepers in order to keep themselves from blowing up the family store, by accident. This is dirty, sure, but it's more like a crack dealer investing in a crooked judge. Is that still protection money, or is there another term? Not up on my mob terminology, sorry.

Either way, I'm not surprised. Just like we got what the electorate voted for, so did they. I suspect the teachers unions are happier with the result right now than I am.

Don't forget the American Association for Justice, who will soon own the medical device and pharmaceutical industry in this country...

The law of unintended consequences just cratered all sorts of union retirement funds.

Let'em twist in the wind on that petard of theirs.
