A note on Afghanistan
For those of you who yearn for a return to geopolitics, we have this via my friend Richard Fernandez: Max Boot, the author of (for my money) the best history of America's small wars, says "Afghanistan is better than you think." Read it all. I am one conservative that hopes President Obama fulfills his pledge to win that war, and that he succeeds.

Afghanistan was never as bad as the media and Obama made it out to be.

It isn't just Afghanistan that is the problem. It's also Pakistan, and thanks to recent logistical and diplomatic problems the issue is growing to include others as well, from the 'Stans to Russia and the Baltic powers. Fortunately, it appears that the Indian component will be contained for the near future.
But I will be amazed if Obama manages to pull off something even approximating original US goals for the country. The necessary components just aren't there. And I was a pro-surge, 'come on you pussies, let us fight these Persian assholes' Iraq hawk.
