Happy Birthday!
Occasional co-blogger TigerHawk Teenager turns 18 today. I've admonished him not to sign any contracts without reading them carefully. I am sure he would welcome any other advice you might have.

1)If you can't already, learn to dance as soon as possible.
2) Always make an appointment for tattoos instead of walking in off the street.
3)Don't fight city hall.
4) Drinking is not a competitive sport. (Projectile vomiting is.)
5)Don't grow a beard until you can.
6) Everyone should have long hair at least once in their lives.
7) When you get tired of long hair, donate it.
8) Don't get a liberal arts degree.
9) Put as many electives into education as you can without getting a liberal arts degree. (Ed classes as mostly women. Sweet natured, nuturing women.)
10)Drinking to forget causes a chemical reaction that essentially sears the hurtful memory into your brain. This, unfortunately, does not work similiarly with class notes.

2 RULES FOR ACHIEVEMENT (and pretty much everything in life)
Rule 1: Decide WHAT you want to achieve.......
Rule 2: Decide WHAT you have give up to get it....
Re music: listen to every kind. There are untold richness to be discovered....
Happy 18.
1) Choose the people you work with carefully, you will eventually spend more time with your co-workers than with your family.
2) The most important part of any job is the paycheck. If it is adequate, you will be happy. If it isn't, there is no way to make the work "rewarding".

Following Tyree's comment - you will spend a lot of time at work, so make sure it is something you enjoy, but don't believe people who tell you to do something you love and the money will follow. That is not a way to pay off student loans.
Read and study Deborah Tannen's "You Just Don't Understand" - the rest of her stuff is derivative from that book, so you don't need to read them. This book is a tool.
Happy birthday.
Happy birthday Tiger Teen.
I'd dispute item #2 on T.A.R.'s list ... avoid the tattoo at all costs, and not just to forego the Hep C ...

Aside from the ongoing observation of the 4/5 Commandment (honoring your mother and father), which is hard to do as an 18 year-old male, I can only offer some advice about females:
1) don't try to come to some intricate understanding of their nature, it will just frustrate you (learn to live with that ambiguity, that certain things just are not knowable from an epistemological standpoint)
2) always be gentlemanly and respectful, listen and be attentive; this includes old-school things like opening doors and holding chairs
3) always be sure that you have, um, consent, even when a bit of alcohol has been consumed
4) always think of your partner's needs first -- be a distance guy and not a sprinter -- it generates good word of, er, mouth; this is hard to do when you are a younger, but it is an excellent form of self-discipline
5) continue to work on technique (as you would in any other physical activity requiring coordination) and customize it for your partner; be a life-long learner in this respect, even if it requires momentary clinical detachment
6) don't think in terms of notches on a belt, which is entirely the wrong approach, it's about sharing a human experience.
Aieee!! Tyree is SO wrong on point 2, though point 1's good. What you do -- whether it uses your strengths and lets you engage, and whether you think it matters in some important way, is WAY more important than the paycheck so long as the paycheck is enough to cover the basics --and the basics don't cost six figures annually! That's not opinion; that's what the research shows. Find out what you're good at and go with it. Develop your optimism and practice being grateful for the good things in your life. You WILL be successful. Some of that success will be measured in $, but many areas will not. On the other hand, if you pursue $ for the sake of $, you're going to end up hating the job and much of the rest of your life also.

Anon-I don't think you finished reading what I wrote.
Notice I said "If it is adequate, you will be happy."
Have you ever tried to support a family of 7 on an inadequate income? Until you have, just accept that I know what I am talking about. No amount of "interesting" or "important" balances out "rent" or "food". In Post Cold War Recession I loaded rolls of carpet by hand into trucks at midnight for minimum wage, and loved it. The smile on my wife's face when I handed her the paycheck was everything I needed out of that job.
Yesterday trying to buy a six-pack of beer was a youthful indiscretion. Today and for the next three years, it is a felony.

Have fun, you're only young once. These days will never come again, so make the most of them. Work hard, play hard, take big bites out of life.
Stand tall, talk straight (honest) with the people you meet, and look them straight in the eye. Smile and be gracious with your speech and manners. It costs you nothing, but earns you the respect of all those around you. Watch your father, he is a good example to follow.
Youthful drinkng is highly overated. I drank a lot (at times) when I was 19 and 20 (legal then) and it got me nowhere, fast. Ditto on the drugs.
Now, go get 'em, tiger!

Hilarious stories about over excessive drinking are best enjoyed when they are about the other guy.

CONGRATULATIONS to ALL Grads!
Hey young Grads
good show I say
you've done it now
you showed us how
You had some good times
You made some good friends
now some will go off
to do it again
So good luck in college
You can do it
Have a real wild time
but don't over do it
Try to make friends fast
many of the early ones
will be the ones
who last
Unless you love
to get up early
don't schedule your classes
way too early
And try to get to class
as much as you can
you'll be glad you did
then you'll deserve a cold can
But try not to party
too much before class
you'll more likely attend
and you won't be an ass
If you fail the easy Calc
don't take the harder one
just keep your eye on the ball
between all the fun
You'll be entering
sort of a fantasy land
of reading, writing, and thinking
with those who can lend a hand
So, do your best with grades
but at least finish the task
and soon another graduation
will come at last...
So
CONGRATULATIONS
GOOD LUCK
and HAVE FUN!!!
:)
