Important advice for single men

I have to admit, I was not smart enough to pursue this strategy when I had the chance.

I have B-neg blood, so it's always in demand. I used to sell it for 35 bucks a unit when I was in medical school in Baltimore...and that would allow me to purchase a train ticket home for the weekend to see my main squeeze (now my main wife) back in New York. The fact that I sold my blood to get a train ticket DID NOT go unnoticed!!

Of course, it is now against the law to be reimbursed to give blood. I guess too many addicts would sell their blood to get drug money...but it sure was great while it lasted.

I gave blood a couple times. Aside from the fact that I nearly fainted both times, it was done at the company that I then worked for, which was mostly men. And so it was mostly men giving blood. And lately I've spent too much time in England, so they think I might have mad-cow disease and won't take me.

Over a period of several years, I earned a 'Gallon' pin from the South Texas Regional Blood Bank. Those visits provided no such opportunities.

I expect that one would have to select specific blood drives to find them rather than regular donations at a blood bank.

I gave blood from my teens up until a few years ago. I was deeply insulted by the intrusive questionnaire they put you through each time although I guess it is necessary.

I have B-pos blood which is slightly more prevalent than B-neg but still pretty rare.

I have B- blood as well, which I believe less than 1% of the population has, and I am right around 100 units donated lifetime. Most of what I have done with the Red Cross this decade has been platelet donations, however, and not whole blood. I can't say that the donation centers or collection points have ever been target-rich environments. Maybe that's a Southern thing that Instapundit has observed, or maybe he is channeling his inner Will Farrell ("DONATE, man, the needles and the blood make women SO HORNY, it's a layup, dude"). I've known a number of women who are either too squeamish or don't weigh enough to donate, but they do a good job with Red Cross fundraisers.

I've never seen a disportionate ratio of women to men at a blood drive. Maybe I just don't get invited to the good ones. Will try again.
