Good news from the war

In the November just completed, a grand total of seven American soldiers were killed in hostile action in Iraq and Afghanistan combined. These are still theaters of war, especially in Afghanistan, but against the measure of history, including the history of those conflicts, they are not very intense.

Actually the count is 8. 7 in Iraq and 1 in Afghanistan. I don't know What? the Afghanistan number tells us, but the Iraq number ties for the second lowest monthly total of hostile fatalities since the start of the war. Iraq is certainly headed in a very positive direction.

Hostile Fire US Soldier KIA in the last 6 months Iraq.
June 24 June
July 6 (All time low)
August 12
Sept. 8
Oct. 7
Nov. 7

In the 6 months previous to that 171 US soldiers were killed by hostile fire.

The seventh KIA in Iraq was a soldier who died at Walter Reed having been injured back in January. I excluded him from the count because his ultimately fatal wounds occurred out of the period and so do not help measure conditions on the ground.

Poor guy, though. Imagine him and his family having to suffer so long, and then to die.

D.C.'s homicide total through 12/2/2008 is 172, which works out to an average of 15.6 murders per month.

The state of California in 1988 (which had then almost the same population as does Iraq now) had 11,780 murders, or almost 1,000 per month.

Just for perspective.

I guess I was aware of this but forgot. I am going to do a little research because I remember right after he died that it was not clear what actually killed him. I read his wounds in Iraq were serious but not considered life threatening. I did read some speculation about suicide, but his wife denied that was even a possibility.

I wonder if more info is available now.
