Islamists vs. Pirates!
The Islamists are going after the pirates! I, too, am confused about which side I should cheer on. The choice is not nearly so clear as, say, rooting for Predator vs. Alien.

The answer seems clear to me. The pirates want fancy cars, pretty women, and big houses. The Somali Islamist insurgents want to create a medieval hell on earth for the people of Somalia.

Yes, it's pretty clear. Round up the pirates, and hang them from a high gallows built on top of a desolate rock in the middle of the channel, and leave their skeletons there for all to see.
Bomb the Islamists' forces into oblivion, educate their women, convert their boy-children into modern globalized iPod-listening kids gleefully studying Java. Erase them so throughly from time that, many generations from now, their descendants will consider them fictional.

Yeah, Ray. Blow up everything. Then give the country USD 40 billion in U.S. foreign aid because the pirates collected somewhere between USD 30 million and USD 150 million in ransom money from other countries. It's the American way.

Didn't like that part, though. Icky. Unless by 'US foreign aid' you meant 'detonating US munitions' in a clever, sarcastic way.

My description is pretty much how the U.S. has done things at times in the past, DF82. See the 1959 Peter Sellers movie "The Mouse That Roared." A tiny country declared war on the U.S. to lose and get foreign aid.

It kinda cracks me up when people talk about Arianna's "journey" from the right to the left. The truth is she has no ideology, she goes where she gets the most attention. Being a conservative pundit wasn't working out, we got tired of her erudite schtick in a big hurry, so naturally she defected to the place where lame-ass schtick is considered genius.

No question at all. I favored the Predators over the Aliens. The Predators are an advanced civilization of hunters with which we can come to terms; heck, they even acknowledged the skill, savvy, and heroism of one of the humans, by according her a scar of triumph over their prey. The Aliens on the other hand are just killing machines.

They aren't going after the pirates because they think piracy is wrong (there is after a long-standing tradition of Muslim piracy, and Muhammad himself was nothing but a land-bound pirate) but because the the pirates aren't giving them their cut. This is much like the many Muslims who condemn terrorism by their co-religionists, but only because of the collateral damage to Muslims, not because terrorizing infidels is morally wrong.
