TurkeyGate

I don't know which is the most hilarious, this video of Sarah Palin giving a matter-of-fact interview in front of a slaughterhouse dude trying to behead a turkey, the breathless outrage of the humorless Huffington Post writer ("Seemingly oblivious to the gruesomeness going on over her shoulder, she carries on talking for over three minutes"), or the nutty observations of the HuffPo commenters (see, e.g., this one).

CWCID: Ann Althouse, who actually uses the word "candyasses."

She's right.

Well, this is funny. Saturday Night Live-ish or Monty Python-ish.

The vapors from the usual crowd almost as amusing.

(I admit, I'm not a Palin fan (I don't detest her either) but I'd laugh even if I were).

Over 90% of people in this country have little clue what the practical realities of food production are like, and most of those people can't handle the truth if they receive it.

Go look up the allowable cockroach content in milk chocolate and then get back to me about being disturbed.

By Blogger Dawnfire82, at Fri Nov 21, 08:53:00 PM:

I'm not terribly disturbed.

"Contrary to what you may have heard, there is no acceptable or allowable number or amount of vermin in a food facility."

or

"3-701.11 Discarding or Reconditioning Unsafe,
Adulterated, or Contaminated Food.*
(A) A FOOD that is unsafe, ADULTERATED, or not honestly
presented as specified under § 3-101.11 shall be discarded or
reconditioned according to an APPROVED procedure.
(B) FOOD that is not from an APPROVED source as specified under
§§ 3-201.11 - .17 shall be discarded.
(C) READY-TO-EAT FOOD that may have been contaminated by an
EMPLOYEE who has been RESTRICTED or EXCLUDED as specified
under § 2-201.12 shall be discarded.
(D) FOOD that is contaminated by FOOD EMPLOYEES, CONSUMERS,
or other PERSONS through contact with their hands, bodily
discharges, such as nasal or oral discharges, or other means
shall be discarded."

Which is directly from the FDA manual on food handling.

But if you could find a reference to 'allowable cockroach content in milk chocolate' regulation, I'd be happy to consider it.

This is a outrage? Not the banks, not Russia, not terrorists, this is what the left respond to? Dear God, they are stupid.

FDA Defect Action levels

"CHOCOLATE AND CHOCOLATE LIQUOR Insect filth
(AOAC 965.38) Average is 60 or more insect fragments per 100 grams when 6 100-gram subsamples are examined
OR
Any 1 subsample contains 90 or more insect fragments"

Well I'll be damned, I always thought that was an urban legend.

At least the title of the document is 'Levels of natural or unavoidable defects in foods that present no health hazards for humans.'

What a remarkable woman! I have commented elsewhere that it really stuck me that she seemed to be having a ball throughout the whole campaign, despite the relentless attacks, and despite the loss. This interview confirmed it. It wasn't just an act. She really was having fun with the whole thing.

(And yes, the video is kind of Pythonesque. :)

By Anonymous Anonymous, at Fri Nov 21, 11:03:00 PM:

"stuck" should be "struck".

By Blogger Who Struck John, at Sat Nov 22, 07:17:00 AM:

Yep, Dawnfire82, there really is a standard.

My point wasn't to argue over where the standard was hiding; my point was that food production (like many processes that the public doesn't think about) involves many things that would put people off their feed if they thought about it ...

By Anonymous Anonymous, at Sat Nov 22, 08:23:00 AM:

In that what is done to turkeys, or any animal, at slaughter is no different than what happens during an abortion, I don't see why the left are so up in arms about this.
