That Iranians are paranoid does not mean we are not out to get them

Candidly, I hope this story is true, because it would restore my faith in the CIA, or at least Moussad.

Security forces in Natanz have arrested two suspected "spy pigeons" near Iran's controversial uranium enrichment facility, the reformist Etemad Melli newspaper reported on Monday.

One of the pigeons was caught near a rose water production plant in the city of Kashan in Isfahan province, the report cited an unnamed informed source as saying, adding that some metal rings and invisible strings were attached to the bird.

"Early this month, a black pigeon was caught bearing a blue-coated metal ring, with invisible strings," the source was quoted as saying of the second pigeon.

OK, chances are these birds were tagged for some scientific reason, but it is still hilarious nonetheless.

Invisible strings? Zounds! That sounds like the black kabbalistic sorcery of the Elders of Zion!

If we don't have a section of the CIA devoted to promoting wacked-out weird conspiracy theories like this in radical Islamist countries, we should.

Come to think of it, such a section would probably be redundant...

I hoped that the pigeons crapped on Khomenei's and Amamadjihadi's portraits. I regret I have one portrait to crap on for my country.

This is perfectly logical, and reasonable, if you remember the dozen or so CIA and MI5 spy squirrels the Iranians claimed to have busted a while back - last year, I think.

Don't ask me how the moose got away, though.

TH -- We are all about pigeons over here.

This children's book (a Newberry Award winner in 1928) was a great find at the public library this summer: Gay Neck: The Story of a Pigeon, by Dhan Gopal Mukerji.

It describes how carrier pigeons were used for intelligence purposes during WWI and ends with this poignant thought:

"Whatever we think and feel will colour what we say or do. He who fears, even unconsciously, or has his least little dream tainted with hate, will inevitably, sooner or later, translate these two qualities into his action. Therefore, my brothers, live courage, breathe courage and give courage. Think and feel love so that you will be able to pour out of yourselves peace and serenity as naturally as a flower gives forth fragrance. Peace be unto all!"

So, I guess that must mean that pigeons are doves! (I'm pretty sure it's the same word in Spanish - paloma.) But, I'll tell you, this particular pigeon was all courage.
