Obama selects his lead apostle

Barack Obama has selected his running mate, and he is Joe Biden, Senator from Delaware. Between the two of them they have 39 years of experience in Washington!

Go to the main page and scroll down for my first reactions on the Biden selection during the speculation phase last night, and click through the NYT link above for some of the better Biden gaffes. This could be a great campaign for the blogosphere.

As the Times article points out, this is going to put at least some small pressure on McCain to pick somebody who is "ready on day one" to be president. Only small pressure, though, because all McCain really needs to insulate himself from criticism is somebody with at least as much experience as Obama. That should not be too difficult.

I am going to climb Algonquin today, so blogging will be sparse until the evening unless I get a post in when we pass through Lake Place or one of my esteemed co-bloggers steps up.

I can't stand Biden. Hopefully this will be a disaster for Obama.

The two are well suited for one another...at least if conceit is the criteria.

Obama is really a blithering idiot off teleprompter, whereas Biden is glib and funny, but is something of a loudmouth.

Those on gaffe-watch will have their hands full.

Those loud, squishy popping sounds you may have heard, while the Biden pick was being announced, were those of thousands of moonbat heads simultaneously exploding.

How is Obama's choice a flat-out gift to the GOP? Let me count the ways....

Scoff as you will but Hussein's pick makes a perfectly balanced dem ticket; one guy knows nothing and the other guy knows everything.

All I want to know is when McCain sold his soul to get this pick.

And, announcing it via a 3AM text message? Did Obama's first two choice turn him down?

Hillary would have had the same kind of problem. The Democrats have a very thin bench.

Ready for "O" and Joe ?

Biden may be good for Obama. For a long time, the polls have been telling us that a “generic” Democrat would win easily. By “generic” Democrat, I suppose what is meant is someone close to the center of the party, not too far to the left; someone who has been around awhile; someone the voters are familiar with.

Obama got the nomination by not being a generic Democrat. That worked fine in the primaries, especially the caucuses. But it probably won’t work as well in the general election. I think Obama realizes this and hence his move to center on so many issues. Such moves to the center make him seem more like two other familiar Democratic candidates – Gore and Kerry – candidates who came very close to being elected president. Choosing Biden links Obama to his party’s past, ties him to someone the voters are familiar with, makes him a bit more a “generic” Democrat. That is not a bad thing to be this year.

I think, "This guy was Washington's lead gaffe machine before Obama came around. He's got a history of not just dishonesty, but being caught in his dishonesty. He possibly has a higher opinion of his opponent than his running mate. Surely there are better choices."

But maybe there just aren't. The Dems have been scraping the barrel for decent candidates the last few years.

Biden’s a disaster. This has got to be God’s gift to the GOP: Obama and Biden, birds of a lying, deceitful feather...

Unless you define the left as the center, as so many leftists do, in what meaningful way has Obama moved to the center. He's just as much a Marxist as he ever was.

Biden is, as Juan Williams's hilariously said on Fox News Sunday, a "decent, clean white guy". He's also a nice frame for a bad picture. Listening to the Democrats extol his experience and foreign policy expertise and aggressive style, I kept wondering...well, why the hell didn't they nominate HIM for president and Obama for VP??? After four years, BO could step into the office with seasoning.

Did you ever think that political strategists represent the "Revenge of the Nerds" in the sense that people who don't seem very smart are playing with our government.
