Iran shuts down the trash talk

Unlike the French swim team, the Iranians are suddenly talking less smack than usual. If you can believe it, Ahmadinejad's vice president is saying they are friends of Israel:

Iranian media are quoting the country's vice president as saying Iranians are "friends of all people in the world — even Israelis."

No, I don't believe it for a second. However, it does confuse the regime's domestic message and undoubtedly irritates the hard right no end, so this sort of thing does come at a price. Perhaps Iran is feeling at least a little heat from the recent diplomatic offensive against it, including the bubbling talks between Israel and Syria.

When somebody like President A. is saying one thing in his country (Death to the Great Satan), and one thing outside his country (Some of my best friends are Je…um…that other religion) you must take each set of statements into account. Friends don’t threaten to nuke other friends.
