An email exchange about the Petraeus hearings

An email tonight from a good friend of mine who is both a veteran of the United States Army ("And yes, I suspect I am still reasonably competent with an M16 - qualified Expert six times in a row") and a graduate of a reasonably decent Ivy League university, regarding the recent treatment of General David Petraeus by the political left and its fellow travelers in the media:

This whole thing is just very frustrating. I feel bad for the guy.

Me:
Don't feel bad for him, feel bad for his critics. Although not a Marine, Petraeus is the kind of guy Ronald Reagan was talking about when he said:

Some people spend an entire lifetime wondering if they made a difference. The Marines don't have that problem.

Win or lose in the capital, in a hundred years historians will still be writing about Petraeus' "surge" in Iraq. It is going to be a classic moment in the history of American "small wars." Nobody will remember MoveOn or any of the rest of the defeatist left, even if they win the next election.

David knew what he was getting into when he took this job. None of this is a surprise to him. Disappointing I'm sure, but not surprising.
