Message to Al Gore III: "Fast is fuelish"

Fatherhood is tough, and I have sympathy for fathers. Even Al Gore:

Al Gore's son was arrested early Wednesday on suspicion of possessing marijuana and prescription drugs after deputies pulled him over for speeding, authorities said.

Al Gore III, 24, was driving a blue Toyota Prius about 100 mph on the San Diego Freeway when he was pulled over at about 2:15 a.m., Sheriff's Department spokesman Jim Amormino said.

The pot I understand -- that could happen to anybody. But who knew a Prius could even go 100 mph? Doesn't Al III understand that its fuel economy -- not to mention its carbon footprint -- sucks at that speed?

Tom Maguire notices that Al III has something of a history of speeding.

Actually, as an owner of a Prius it doesn't surprise me it can go 100. It is an actual car you know. And I bet it could go 120 and get better gas mileage than 3/4 of the cars on the road. And when you're high and dodging trolls and dragons, the handling is phenomenal.

Yes, even the nets and PBS mention the Gore III's getting busted, though they neglect his rap sheet on drugs and other unreported stuff like his getting kicked out of St. Alban's---like his father Al III was a snitch and a miscreant at the same time. And they neglect that his "prescription" drugs were non-prescribed street buys.

Al Gore II's strange inability to get into law school has never been examined by an MSM avid for every sordid detail of your average Repub candidates CV. The urban legend is that he had what used to be called a massive "crack-up" during his college years---the lefty MSM has helped him cover up these factoids which would be fine by me had the MSM been even-handed in its cover-up mode.

Al II is actually a decent guy in person and went out of his way to greet my 6-year old daughter in the White House Mess when he was on crutches due to a basketball Achilles-heel incident.

In public, he is a stuffed confection of leftist twaddle and self-righteous flimflammery. But he has constantly played his hand as though he has a Full House even though every time he is unmasked, it's been a busted flush!

The secret sins of the fathers are passed on to their kids, which is why I fear for my now 18-year old daughter!

I seriously hope that this is the last time I hear you complain about the blogs/media poking into the lives of the children of public figures!

And yeah, I'm thinking about your post full of burning indignation about the evil lefty media treatment of Mary Lynne Cheney. Now granted, she didn't break any laws - although I don't doubt some people that you share a political party with wouldn't mind if her conduct were criminalized - and I would hope that she be allowed to live her life in peace. I also grant that there are significant substantive differences between this case and MLC's - Al Gore III sounds like a spoiled rich kid who is in need of some poking-fun-at. But as a matter of principle, if you are going to join in the public snickering at Al Gore's kid, then you should just agree that celeb kids are fair game and get off your high horse about it.

I don't hold much with the urban legends part. There's plenty of that to go around for everyone, and if you check snopes.com you'll see a pattern as to which ones about politicians are true and which false.

What torques me off is that Al III had his marijuana bust up while Dad was VP, but it somehow didn't make the news then.

Yeah, I have some sympathy for fathers, because you can do 'most everything right and still get a bad 'un. On the other hand, I have four sons in their 20's, none of whom has done any of those things.

Phrizz11 -

Nearly as I can tell, my posts on Mary Cheney relate to two points. First, the attempts by the mainstream press (my favorite whipping boy, the NYT, in particular) to goad conservatives into denouncing Mary Cheney, and second, the various statements made by Democrats about Mary Cheney's relationship with her family (particularly Elizabeth Edwards' scurrilous claim in the 2004 campaign that Dick Cheney's reaction to John Edwards' reference to her daughter reflects his "shame" over her lesbianism). That said, I think the differences between the Al Gore III case -- serial criminal and civil offenses over many years -- and Mary Cheney's lawful sexual and reproductive practices are dispositive. And, no, I have never argued that one's consanguinity with a politician should confer immunity from richly deserved bad publicity. The question is whether the publicity was or was not richly deserved, and I think you and I agree that Mary Cheney's was not and Al Gore III's at least arguably was.

I'm wondering what Rush Limbaugh's take will be on all this. He's done a few parking lot deals himself, but I'm betting he won't be able to contain his glee.

Perhaps Jeb Bush could also chime in since everyone has probably already forgotten about his daughter, Noel, smuggling crack into her court ordered state rehab facility.

This game of sniggering over the mistakes of politician's children, and what it says about their parents and the political party of their parents, can be endless fun.

(TH: With all due respect, there's no need for you to bother dealing with the dweebs and trolls -- we can handle them just fine. Now get the hell outta heah and go back to your vacation!)

Dear Mr. Phrizz11:

I would call your parentage and intellect into question, but you seem to have done the heavy lifting for me.

"I seriously hope that this is the last time I hear you complain about the blogs/media poking into the lives of the children of public figures!"

You're seeing a whole team of doctors, aren't you? Apart from the usual ream of psychologists and psychiatrists, I presume there are a few opticians on the staff, as well?

There certainly should be.

1. Tiger didn't "complain" about anything or anyone. In fact, if you'll try doing this thing called "actually reading the words", you'll see that not only did he not "complain" about anything, but he offered a truly despicable person his sympathy as a fellow parent.

2. Most normal people, not currently on psychotropic drugs, would agree that there's a huge difference between talking about some bit player like Mary Cheney, and talking about the Far Left's talking about her. Get it?

And...

(saving the best for last in the best tradition of good showmanship...)

3. The article wasn't about Al Gore's son -- it was about a goddamn CAR!!

Phrizzy, I know you'll argue the point, but, quite honestly, when you skip your morning meds, it shows.

All the best,
Doc

Why would Toyota want to build into what is essentially an urban vehicle the capability to hit 100 MPH? BTW, from what I've read, the Prius does no better in fuel economy on the highway than any other similar conventional vehicle powered only by a gasoline engine. Reason? You're burning gasoline all the time.
