Eagle picture of the day

Link.

In other bald eagle news, there is a nesting pair building a huge nest in the tree growing out of our front porch. I'll try to snap some shots tomorrow.

TH, that is very exciting news, (as the tree that housed the nest the last several years blew down and many thought the eagles would not return. Are they nesting above the PC?

Last summer I was told that eagles select their nesting trees by dropping sticks and branches from the air. If the tree catches the branches in the correct way to form a foundation, it becomes eligible for nesting. Pretty remarkable if true.

Where I live, in the rural Napa Valley, Bald Eagles can be seen (rarely) at a local reservoir, where the Osprey is more commonly seen.

Having been a birder for some 50 years, it as a matter of great satisfaction to me that this marvelous creature has recently been removed from the Endangered Species Act's list of (you guessed it!) endangered species!

I still find it surprising and gratifying that a bird which I saw only four times in my first 35 years, I can now see pretty much whenever I am willing to drive a short distance. Not to mention the fact that the Ivory-Billed Woodpecker, which was thought to have been extinct even before I was born, has recently been found in the swamps of Arkansas.

Loss of biodiversity my ***!
