Wanker of the day

Trent Lott: "I'll just say this about the so-called porkbusters. I'm getting damn tired of hearing from them. They have been nothing but trouble ever since Katrina."

Fool.

I always remember that Lott was very ineffective as Majority/Minority Leader, seeming to put success in the Senate ahead of any goals of the national Republican Party. Always quick to cut a deal, as if achieving consensus was more important estabishling and standing on principle. These comments simply reinforce my perception of him as just another politician that probably shoule be term-limited out of office. When are we going to embrace, nationally, the Iowa model of drawing congressional districts so that we might have a chance of throwing these bums out.

What's the Iowa model?

Dawnfire82, Iowa is the only state in the country (I believe) that does not gerry-mandering Congressional districts every ten years. Instead, it has a bi-partisan commission charged with drawing districts with the straightest lines and most coherent geography. I think it makes a real attempt to have it track county lines. This makes Iowa's Congressional races substantially more competitive, and in any case largely does away with the absurd gerry-mandering you see everywhere else since people learned to apply computers to house-by-house census data.

That having been said, the Iowa model would not have done away with Trent Lott, who is, after all, a Senator. No redistricting. We have all of Mississippi to blame for him.
