A public relations defeat for the Second Amendment
Vice President Dick Cheney accidentally shot and injured a man during a weekend quail hunting trip in Texas, his spokeswoman said Sunday.
Harry Whittington, 78, was "alert and doing fine" after Cheney sprayed Whittington with shotgun pellets on Saturday at the Armstrong Ranch in south Texas, said property owner Katharine Armstrong.
We eagerly await the reaction from the anti-Cheney, anti-gun, animal rights left.

Wow. Shot him in the face. Dick Cheney shot him in the face.
I think I'll repeat that line to myself a few hundred more times before I get back to other news.

, atOn the contrary, don't be surprised if the Democrats pass a pro-gun bill that give free guns to Republicans and a license to hunt in a confined area.

what do you expect after 5 deferments?

Good thing they weren't deer hunting. The reaction from the loony left is already trickling in.
WASHINGTON, Feb. 12 /U.S. Newswire/ -- James and Sarah Brady made comments today related to Vice President Cheney's reportedly accidental shooting yesterday in Texas.
"Now I understand why Dick Cheney keeps asking me to go hunting with him," said Jim Brady. "I had a friend once who accidentally shot pellets into his dog - and I thought he was an idiot."
"I've thought Cheney was scary for a long time," Sarah Brady said. "Now I know I was right to be nervous."
These people are unhinged.

Some of the articles I've read make it sound like that fellow is getting some decent R&R after his "peppering". So far it's been pretty softball press...the nightly comedy shows are going to have a field day.
I've always heard that if you're going to shoot somebody, make sure it's fatal or the lawsuit will be terrible. Cheney not only shoots an elderly man in the face and torso with a shotgun...he shoots a lawyer. That takes some guts.
While it was said somewhere else, I'll repeat the comment:
"I'd rather go hunting with Cheney that for a car ride with Kennedy...."
The problem with the incident, all politics aside, is that a sitting VP probably should not be out bird hunting with his friends and using live ammunition. What if the roles had been reversed, and Whittington had accidently shot Cheney? It would be hard for the Secret Service to live that down, even if the wounds were not life threatening. If Cheney wants to hunt, he should go with Secret Service personnel only, as they will have precise muzzle discipline and will not fail to signal to the rest of the hunting party, as the 78 year-old Whittington evidently did. Or, he can wait until January 2009.

Yep, it’s a slow newsday until the Veep shoots a lawyer :)
In other satirical news, noted Presidential candidate (fill in name here) quickly withdrew from a previous scheduled invitation to go hunting with Al Gore…
As an exercise in free speech, what do you think the spin would have been if a Democratic VIP had done exactly the same thing? (Contrary to popular opinion, they do go hunting, but only during election season with photographers in tow)

I've been away all day, and I must say I'm delighted with the comments on this post.
First, Uptown, let me just say that your crack about the five draft deferments was hilarious. Yes, it was scurrilous lefty snark, but I respect it as an elegant example of same.
Second, the point made by the last Anonymous guy, about how the VEEP shouldn't go hunting other than with the Secret Service, is probably spot on.
Third, Georgfelis wants to know what would have happened had John Kerry done this on one of his fake hunting trips. You would have heard no sanctimony from the right at all, except from the gun boosters who would have renewed their calls for firearms safety and handling training in all schools. But you would have heard a million bwahaha's echoing across the land.
and now the guy has a heart attack, Cheney must have come to visit him in the hospital....
