More Dap Dippin'
Last summer I first wrote about Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings after becoming obsessed with their newest release, "Naturally". Then last fall I got a chance to see them live for the first time and I had a few comments about the show.
Last evening Charlottesville was blessed to have Sharon Jones pass through town once again, and so of course I did everything I could to get to the show. I suggest you do the same if you have the opportunity. To all you pundits in DC, they'll be at the Black Cat tonight.
The revival of gritty funk in New York is a fascinating story in a current musical environment that is long on glitz and short on authenticity. It is a story of a small group of dedicated musicians playing in a few bands like the Dap-Kings, the Sugarman Three, and the Mighty Imperials, coalescing around the small label Desco, and then its progeny Daptone and Soul Fire. It is one of those interesting, practically unheard of music scenes that is tremendously exciting for those lucky enough to have stumbled upon it, much like the NYC ska scene in the 90s. These guys toil not for riches but for a love of the music, and those of us lucky enough to catch the scene have richer lives for it.
Follow the links if you want to learn more. Or better yet, get yourselves to the Black Cat tonight. You won't be sorry.
