Dap Dippin' with Sharon Jones

The crowd at the Satellite Ballroom in Charlottesville last night was a happy and eclectic one. There was the expected smattering of UVA students of course, along with middle age soul freaks wearing their Stax t-shirts, bearded hipsters wearing Doc Martens or leopard print creepers and the occasional pork pie hat, and a couple of older couples with a professorial look about them, perhaps exploring content for their new class on “soul music and the civil rights movement,” or something of that ilk.

The Dap-Kings walked on looking sharp in their sharkskin suits and narrow black ties. There they were left to right along the stage: a power horn section featuring trumpet, tenor sax, and baritone sax, two drum sets along the back, and on the right of the stage, the bassist and two guitarists all standing with their backs to the crowd (reminiscent of Stuart Sutcliffe in early Beatles photos).

They brought forth a crisp blast of fast moving funky soul that grabbed the crowd and shook it, but it didn’t take long for the audience to find the groove. After a couple of warm up numbers, they introduced the star of the show, Miss Sharon Jones, who bounced up on the crowded stage, took the mike, and stole the show. The Dap-Kings played number after number, providing temendous backing the whole way, but at times it was as if the band had disappeared, outshadowed by a five foot ball of fire who owned the stage, the band, and the crowd. When we emerged 90 minutes later, drenched and exhausted, we knew we had been part of something special.

Check the schedule. If Sharon Jones and Dap-Kings come into your orbit, they are not to be missed.

The guy third from the left looks like the guy who played "Squiggy" in "Laverne & Shirley". Does David Lander have a son who is in the band?
