Life on the edge

How would you like to be among the Iowa government bureaucrats advocating a road project that has been publicly denounced by the most popular man in the state?

NORTH LIBERTY -- University of Iowa football Coach Kirk Ferentz and his wife, Mary, were among more than 100 people who spoke out Monday afternoon at a special Johnson County Board of Supervisors meeting against controversial plans for roads connecting Iowa City, North Liberty and Solon.

Of course Captain Kirk is also in the midst of the annual speculation regarding whether or not he will depart for a job in the NFL.

"They're totally unrelated," he said of the roads controversy and current head coaching vacancies in the NFL. "We've lived in this house for six years. We love our home."
Sure. But if the road is approved and he leaves, the Johnson County Board of Supervisors is going to have a big problem next election day.

The critical speculation: Why would Kirk Ferentz complain about a planned road if he were moving out of town? Nobody fights city hall in a vacuum.

Captain Kirk's not going to the NFL. Not this year, anyway.

I guess Captain Kirk will stay in his home town of Riverside...
