Michael Bloomberg's "anti-fat" crusade and government waste

The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygien Thursday urged the burg's restaurateurs and food suppliers to voluntarily eliminate partially hydrogenated vegetable oils from the kitchen.

One of the reasons why Americans feel that they get so little from their tax dollars is that American politicians insist on duplicating federal and state functions at the local level. Why, pray tell, does the government of The City of New York concern itself with the nutritional value of the ingredients used in the greatest restaurants in Western hemisphere? Yesterday's pronouncement does nothing but set the stage for a pointless legislative and public relations battle between levels of government. Taxpayers will end up funding both sides of a fight among bureaucrats over the regulation of restaurant food, which is in any case a trivial percentage of the calories consumed by the typical American. Michael Bloomberg should deal with the obesity of his own government before worrying about fat in the restaurants of New York City.
