Government says 1 in 5 Americans is mentally ill. 1 in 5 Americans work for the Government. Do the math.
Sorry to take away from the fun, but 1 in 5 is probably an accurate statistic. It's not an increase in wimpiness or serious redefinition. Life has always been hard. We brag on our ancestors who went through hard times, as if they always did so without complaint, depression, or alcoholism. They had their whiners, same as us, but mostly they just white-knuckled their way through, as a lot of folks do today.
Yeah, it may be numerically accurate, but don't lose sight of the sad fact that we have "defined down" mental illness. What used to be a merely inadequate personality is now a neurosis, etc., etc.
I'm not sure this is just part of the old "I'm OK, you're OK" catching up with us!
